In this Ultimate Guide to Psychic Readings, I’ll share all about psychic readings, including the skills and tools used, what to expect when you book a reading, how to find the right psychic, and pick the right reading for you!
What is a psychic reading?
A psychic reading is when a psychic – someone with enhanced spiritual abilities, reads you or a situation about you using their skills and possibly physical tools. Every psychic is different so every reading will be a bit different because they are highly individualized.
The abilities a psychic uses are typically clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairsentience (clear feeling), clairaudience (clear hearing), and claircognizance (clear knowing). The psychic uses these abilities to tap into a situation and pull information from Spirit to give you insight.
Tools For Psychic Readings
Just like psychic readings are different, the tools used can vary greatly. Typical tools used in readings include
- oracle cards (each deck is a little different based on the creator’s choices and theme),
- tarot cards (while decks vary in appearance and theme, these have more standardized meanings),
- crystals,
- runes (typically these are Norse),
- pendulums (crystal, metal, clay, shell, or wood),
- salt,
- various waters (holy, salt, mixed with oils or essences, charged in moonlight or sunlight),
- music,
- chants,
- tea leaves or coffee grounds,
- objects (something a client brings for information – like a ring, shirt, or other item that has special meaning)
- incense,
- candles and other types of fire
- palms (listed here because they are a tool, though you bring it with you to your reading!)
- herbs and
- teas.
There may be other types of psychic and divination tools used, but these are the most commonly seen.
Skills Used In Psychic Readings
The skills to read vary greatly depending on the type of reading and the psychic’s abilities. The best most adept psychic readings involve most of if not all of the below:
- having a wide knowledge of different mythologies,
- the meaning and historical uses of the tools listed above (or at least those they use),
- an understanding of psychology, sociology, and culture
- a knowledge of comparative religion and some study of sacred texts
- an understanding of class, gender, sexuality, and educational differences
- knowing how to facilitate a safe sacred space
- a knowledge of peaceful communication techniques and conflict resolution
- energy work – reiki or pranic manipulation
- an understanding of dreams
- extensive personal spiritual work
- understanding of trauma, generational wounds, and how these impact communication or reception of information
- adherence to one’s own ancestral lineage and respect for others’
- shamanic journeying, including soul retrieval as well as
- an understanding of the energy body and chakra system.
The Differences Between Psychics
This may seem like a lot, but this is why there is a huge difference in psychic readings. Someone who is deeply educated in spirituality, culture, and communication will give the most powerful and insightful readings. This is why the best psychic readers are not only practiced in connecting with Spirit, but also adept at understanding the material world. A psychic cannot adequately interpret or communicate messages from Spirit unless they have this depth and breadth of knowledge.
This is because Spirit communicates with symbols, which is a digital form of communication – in other words, it is deeply layered. For example, if we look at the symbol of the tortoise, in Western society we might think of The Tortoise and The Hare. We would think about how the tortoise is slow and methodical, and maybe we would think about its longevity.
But if we have a broader base of knowledge, we also know the tortoise could refer to the Chinese celestial beast, the Black Tortoise, which has a whole other set of associations and meanings. Suddenly, the tortoise could refer to a time of day (night), season (winter), or location (north), as well as a powerful warrior (think of that armored shell!), or all of the above! Without that knowledge, the symbol loses its richness and Spirit’s message can be lost.
The more knowledge and experience a psychic has, the better the readings.
Every psychic won’t have every skill and knowledge base above. Truthfully, they don’t have to. But I would argue they need half to give reasonable readings, and 75% of what is listed above to give really good readings, and all to give truly epic readings.

Every psychic is different because they have different abilities, use different tools, and have different skill sets, so no two psychic readings will look exactly the same. That said, there are some common things we can find.
Most psychics will ask you want area you want to focus on. This may be very general – like a broad topic of love or career, or it can be very specific, like if should you date that guy Steve from accounting or if you should accept that job offer in Idaho.
A good psychic can do either a broad topic or a specific one and give you insight in either direction, however a broad topic will give you some wiggle room for something a little “off” topic. This is because Spirit doesn’t give you the message you want, but the one you need. Sometimes that means you’ll get a message not about Steve at all, but about the pattern you approach dating, or about Rob from IT.
They may ask for some object or image to help focus their reading. For example, when I’m doing online readings, I like to have a photo of the person to help direct my reading, though I could just as easily use their name or the sound of their voice. The objects involved will vary with the type of reading.
A psychic could use a ring or heirloom to connect to the spirit of a long-dead relative. They could also use such an object to help locate someone. If they were doing a space clearing, they might walk the space to be cleared first to assess what needs to be done before doing the clearing work. In this case, the object is the building.
If you are doing an online reading, the reading may be done and then you receive a written report, an audio recording, or a video recording. You may also have a video call where the psychic relays what they read in advance or does the reading live on the call. The format and delivery will depend on the psychic.
If you are doing an in person reading, it could be done live or if you made an appointment, they may have done the reading in advance and your session will go over what they psychic found.
Afterwards, they may give you a written report or not. I always like to give people a written report they can refer back to because I feel like it is the best way to access the information and stew over certain parts of a reading. I do this whether it’s an online or in person reading.
How to Find the Right Psychic
Finding the right psychic is tricky because there are a lot of charlatans and cons out there. These days there are a lot of people cloning social media accounts and reaching out to followers to fleece them with readings.
A legitimate psychic will never DM you saying they have a message for you that you have to pay to receive. A legitimate psychic will always wait to be contacted first, otherwise we’re using extra energy on people who aren’t interested in readings!
Someone who is the real deal will have testimonials available for you to read and or references to connect with. For example, if someone wanted to know what a reading is like with me, I can offer you some public social testimonials written on clients’ feeds, or I can give you contact information, or I can send you to my testimonial page. It’s really obvious I’ve had clients, how they feel about their time with me, and what you might expect based on former clients’ experiences.
Finding the right psychic for you is more than just finding someone who is legit. Check out who a psychic is before booking them. Spend a little time reading their social media posts. Look at their website. Read what clients are saying about them. Think about how you want to feel when you’re working with a psychic. Do you want them to be casual? Are swear words a turn off? Do you want someone who is really into woo stuff? Or do you want someone who is a little academic? Do you want someone who considers themselves a healer? Wisewoman? Starseed? Shaman? Priestess? If you don’t know what these are, it probably doesn’t matter – you want someone who will meet you where you are! These are all things you need to consider before choosing a psychic.

This is because if the psychic’s energy is off or their values are different than yours, the experience of a psychic reading could be downright upsetting, offensive, or even laughable. That, however, is not how a reading should be. Instead, you should leave a reading feeling affirmed and armed with powerful insight and likely thoughtful questions.
While the person is important, if you’ve whittled your choices down to a few and you’re struggling to decide who to book, then it’s time to look at the type of reading.
Finding the Right Psychic Reading for You
Different people prefer different modalities and different feelings when they have a psychic reading done. If you really want tea leaves read, you need to find someone who specializes in tea leaf readings. If you want to have your palm read, find some palm readers to consider.
Most psychic readers offer a variety of options. This is because different people prefer different readings but also, certain readings will work better for certain kinds of issues.
You need to know the kind of reading that will work best for you. A good psychic will answer any of your questions about what they do. They will clearly explain what to expect in one of their readings. For example, if you came to me and wanted to get an answer to a question, I would ask if you wanted an intuitive answer, a card reading, or if you wanted a full combined reading or something else based on the kind of question you had. Alternatively, you could go to my shop page and look at the reading offerings and read a detailed description of each and pick one of those.
If you were looking for the state of your spirit, or even your body, I would suggest an energy body reading. On the other hand, if you were having trouble with a building or your garden, I would suggest cleansing or land work, which is a completely different situation.
It really depends on the type of issue you’re having what kind of psychic reading and service works best.
This is why it’s important to be clear to yourself what you hope to get out of your time. If you’re open to whatever comes through, a general reading will likely work for you using a common modality like palms, cards, channeling, etc. If you’re looking to connect with a loved one, you need to make sure the psychic you’re booking is able to do medium work and is willing to connect directly to a deceased person. While I do medium work, I do not typically connect to deceased people with very few exceptions (some emergency/crisis situations and the message you most need from Spirit allow for this). Generally speaking, you should go to someone else if that’s what you’re looking for.
A legitimate psychic reader will openly discuss the kinds of readings they do and what will be the best fit for you. They may also chat with you about your expectations and whether those are realistic relating to readings they provide.
