I forgive you.

I forgive you for being too fragile to handle the word “racism,” and the legacy that comes with it. I forgive the little white lies. I forgive you for ignoring the needs of a woman doing her best to love her child, by breastfeeding in her work’s bathroom stall because there was no place else. I forgive you for letting 40,000 people die every year because they could not afford health care. I forgive you for training your son to ignore the humanity of another person and treating them like a thing to be used and discarded. I forgive you for declaring war on an idea, so your companies could profit.

I forgive you spoiling your dinner. I forgive you for getting drunk and getting behind the wheel, taking everyone’s life in your hands. I forgive you for murder. I forgive you poisoning the water, and then lying about it. I forgive you for being scared of not having enough. I forgive you for feeling entitled. I forgive you for violating little children. I forgive you for yelling. I forgive you for creating solutions to problems that no one has, and then convincing people they need them. I forgive you for being scared of change. I forgive you for denying whole groups of people access to the things they deserve to embrace human experience.

I forgive you for ignoring parts of yourself, hoping they would go away if you pushed them down real deep. I forgive you for doing too much, at the expense of everyone around you. I forgive you for shrouding your agenda in language of love, pretending you were doing things for the good of all, when it so clearly hurts.

I forgive you for taking two cookies, instead of one. I forgive you for becoming blinded by anger. I forgive you for lusting after power. I forgive you for growing up to be just as violent as your parents. I forgive you for never learning how to feel another’s pain. I forgive you for lashing out when you were hurting. I forgive you for saying the wrong thing. I forgive you for shaming someone, so you could feel worthy. I forgive you for breaking into someone’s house to steal. I forgive you for vandalizing.

I forgive you for ignoring scientific facts, because you’re scared of intellectuals. I forgive you for wanting small government, even though there are some things only government can do. I forgive you for not taking care of yourself, because you thought you didn’t deserve it. I forgive you for feeling like people need to be punished, because you were once punished. I forgive you for hating others, because really, you hate yourself.

I forgive you for pretending to be someone you’re not. I forgive you for not knowing what to do, and so you did nothing. I forgive you for being apathetic, when so much work has yet to be done. I forgive you for not showing up to share your voice, because you thought it didn’t matter.

I forgive you.

I forgive it all. I forgive each. I forgive all.

In my arms, I take your wrongs – your shame and guilt, flooding them with light. I wrap you. I embrace you.

Dearest Sacred Human, my heart is big enough, even for you.
